Join Artistree Gallery member, Wayne Walma, for this class in fine wood working.  Students will explore the use of small pegs to “appliqué” wood to wood, for the purpose of creating designs or images.  Each student will create one (or more, if time) unique wood hanging of their own design.  Wayne will go over all steps involved for the project.  Students will make several practice appliqués, then design and implement their own project.

Wayne Walma is from Mass City, MI and since retirement, he has gone back to his life-long, “playing with wood”, first in collaborations with his wife, Pam Beal, who is a quilt artist.  Wayne makes unique wooden frames that compliment Pam’s art quilts.  Moving forward to more independent pieces, Wayne has found his own artistic voice.  His “appliqué with wood” art is inspired by quilting and uses the wood as a quilter might, by piecing and appliquéing, not on fabric, but wood on wood.  Wayne also uses old, hand-planed flooring, hollow logs, apple wood broken by raccoons, and old roofing found in the U.P. for sculptural pieces and furniture.  His work can be found at Artistree Gallery, in exhibits and is available for commission.   To see more of Wayne’s work go to:   www.overthefencedesignsgallery.blogspot.com
