Discover the art of telling your story in metal. In Metal Poetry with Mavis, you’ll learn how to design and hand-stamp meaningful words and textures into brass and copper to create one-of-a-kind charms and pendants.

Learn the fundamentals of wire jewelry while creating stylish, ready-to-wear earrings. This 2-hour workshop is designed for beginner and intermediate students interested in earring and charm making.

Proper use of jewelry tools and pliers

Basket Weaving 101 – Remote Control Basket

Spend the day learning traditional basket-weaving techniques with this class designed for absolute beginners. Lay out a rectangular base, weave up the sides, rim, and lash. You’ll have the choice to add a splash of color or use all-natural reed for a more natural look. Many colors of dyed reed will be available. This basket was originally designed to hold the many remote controls that are floating around the house, but is also the perfect size for serving crackers or muffins. Approximate size: 8 inches long x 4 inches wide x 3 inches high. Dianne Mockler is a long-time basket weaver and instructor from Park Falls, WI. She will share many hints and tips and will coach you every step of the way. This class will provide the foundation for additional basket weaving classes at LOLA and beyond. Prepare to be amazed at what you can create in just one class. Leave with a completed basket ready for staining.

Not quite a cathead, not quite a market basket, this class offers some interesting twists for experienced basket weavers. Learn how to weave a modified cathead using a rounded rectangular hoop instead of a traditional “D” handle. Credit for this unique basket design goes to well-known Wisconsin basket weaver Marlene Meyer (Bluff Creek Baskets) for her Christmas Carrier.
Shaping will be emphasized, along with triple twining and how to confidently weave a “step-up”. Weavers may choose a traditional rim with flat/oval reed, but the beautiful, braided border is worth the challenge. While the sample is done in Christmas colors, participants in this class will choose between warm and cool color palettes. A coordinating miniature wreath is included in the class fee.
The basket measures approximately 12 inches across at the top, 6 inches wide, and stands about 9 inches tall including the handle. Open to intermediate and advanced weavers. Please bring a plastic dishwashing tub or bucket, an old towel, and lunch. Wear clothes that can get a little wet.

Students will learn the fundamentals of glass fusing while creating their own unique glass artwork. Under guided instruction, students will assemble their projects using a variety of glass materials, including sheet glass, frit, stringers, and decorative embellishments. Once completed, projects will be kiln-fired by the instructor, transforming individual pieces into beautiful fused glass artwork. Students will also learn about the firing process, and the differences between tack fusing, full fusing, and slumping techniques. Because kiln firing and cooling require additional time, artwork will not be available to take home the day of class. Projects will be kiln-fired at a later date, and students will be notified when their finished pieces are ready for pickup. This class provides a fun and supportive environment to experiment with glass and create a one-of-a-kind piece that can be displayed, gifted, or incorporated into functional art. Create your own original “Great Northwoods-inspired linocut print” in this fun, hands-on workshop! Whether you’re inspired by towering pines, loons, bears, wolves, fish, wildflowers, or your favorite Northwoods landscape, you’ll transform your ideas into a beautiful hand-carved block print. Students will learn the fundamentals of linocut printmaking, including transferring a design, safely carving a linoleum block, applying ink, and hand-printing multiple copies of their artwork. Along the way, you’ll explore composition, positive and negative space, and techniques for creating bold, expressive prints. This six-hour workshop provides plenty of time to design, carve, print, and experiment, making it perfect for both beginners and those with previous printmaking experience.
Leave with your hand-carved linoleum block, several original prints, and the skills to continue printmaking at home.
