Design, Carve, & Print Your Holiday Cards using Linocut Relief Printmaking Technique

Explore the basic technique of Linocut relief printmaking. Students will learn to balance positive and negative space as they design a composition optimal for relief printing, cut their designs into an EZ-Cut printing block, and print their designs on card stock, all in time to mail for the holidays. Class fee includes all materials excluding envelopes.

1. Participants will:
   1. Review basic supplies and materials and workspace requirements
   2. View a sampling of Linocut prints from multiple artists as inspiration
   3. Design using abstraction to simplify and emphasize key elements while removing distractions. 
   4. Discuss composition relating to positive & negative space/contrast/pattern/rhythm/emphasis/unity.
   5. Sketch and refine a personal design.
   6. Transfer mirrored design to an EZ-Cut printing block.
   7. Carve design.
   8. Test print, refine, and print design.
   9. Showcase what was learned by discussing class results.
   10. Leave with a handout and holiday cards to send family and friends.

Instructor Bio:

Donna Murray-Tiedge has a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in art and design and a PhD in aesthetic education (teaching through the arts). She has taught at the University of Illinois, University of Wisconsin Oshkosh and Stevens Point, and online for Kent State. She continues to teach online for Boston University. She dabbles in diverse mediums, including drawing, painting, photography, and woodworking. She has been vacationing in Land O Lakes since 1969 and became a permanent resident in 2015.
