Discuss, Analyze, Explore

Instructor Bernie Hupperts joins us for a return engagement to lead a new five-week musical theatre discussion series that looks at how the theme of a musical is exemplified through its music, dialogue, and dance. Excerpts from the musicals to be discussed will be viewed on a large TV, followed by group discussions. No previous knowledge about musical theatre is necessary.

Looking at Social Issues Through Musical Theatre

Musical theatre can help foster social awareness through exposure to the social issues, events, and cultures that are depicted in theatre, from script to stage. Some of the themes to be explored in this discussion series include immigration, class, love, violence, and racial prejudice. Some of the musicals to be discussed include: West Side Story, A Chorus Line, The Book of Mormon, My Fair Lady, Hairspray, Mame, The Sound of Music, Dear Evan Hansen, In the Heights, The Pajama Game, Les Misérables, and Big River.

“This class was very well organized, presented, and facilitated. Recommended for anyone, not just those with a background in musical theatre. The instructor Bernie Hupperts did a great job of presenting the material to a class with a wide range of experience; well done!”  –student from spring 2021 Musical Theatre Discussion class
