Pop-Up Plein Air Painting

Come spend the morning outdoors learning landscape painting basics. En Plein Air (French for painting outdoors) is a unique arts experience, going back centuries and made into a fine art form by the French Impressionists, trying to capture the changing ephemeral light. It’s a wonderful feeling to slow down, observe, and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us.

 

Enjoy the beautiful Headwaters landing at the Wisconsin River on W Shore Dr, between Land O’ Lakes and Phelps, where the river runs into Outlet Bay on the Lac Vieux Desert. (Parking lot is on W Shore Dr, south of Sunrise Lodge) Participants will be able to set up the provided easel anywhere along the trail, river, or lake. McCall will give layered instructions and demos, with plenty of time to paint on your own in between, with her coming around to each person to help.

 

Beginners welcome (and encouraged!) All supplies and tools will be included, though participants should wear clothes to paint in or a smock, bring a lawn chair if you’d prefer to sit, and sunscreen/bug spray if needed. A hat is also highly recommended! Feel free to bring water/coffee/wine (we don’t’ judge!) and some snacks…basically, anything you’d need to be outside for a couple hours in Wisconsin weather (so maybe even a sweatshirt just in case) We will be using water-based oil paints, and they will stain clothes, so make sure it’s something you don’t mind getting paint on (because you will, somehow, even if you’re careful..)

 

Bathroom facilities – there is a small outhouse/port-a-potty type bathroom on site.

*we just found out that Vilas County is now requiring a parking permit for certain places, of course this is one. You can obtain a seasonal pass through Vilas County or purchase a one-day for $5 at location. Sorry for an inconvenience.

Instructor Bio

 

McCall Hocking is the LOLA Arts Marketing Communications Coordinator. She is a former high school art teacher, an avid painter, and a mom of two kiddos under 5 fueled by coffee and anxiety. She loves plein air because it’s a relaxing way of enjoying both art and nature, two of her favorite things, and likes noticing shadows and shape and experimenting with color mixing.
