Kumihimo Spiral Bracelets

Kumihimo Spiral Bracelets

Thursday August 17th

10am-4pm

$60 Jewelry class

Kumihimo (“gathered threads”) is a traditional Japanese artform of making braids by crisscrossing cording into a pattern using a specialized foam disk.

You’ll create two bracelets in this class.

First, choose from many colors of silk cording to learn the basic spiral braid, then add clasps to complete a simple spiral bracelet.

Next, you’ll learn how to add size 8/0 beads to the basic braid and create a beautiful, beaded version.  Since the addition of beads is more time consuming than the simple braid, you may not complete the second bracelet in class.  You will have the skills and materials to easily finish on your own.

Class fee of $60 includes all materials and a Kumihimo braiding disc to keep.

Instructor bio: Dianne Mockler is a basket weaver and fiber artist who began weaving in 1996 and soon after shared her enthusiasm for the craft by teaching others to weave. She enjoys working with a variety of materials, and is especially interested in weaving baskets with a Northwoods theme, or natural materials such as birch bark, willow, pine needles and antlers. Her great great grandfather owned a knitting mill in Milwaukee in the late 19th century; she believes she is honoring her heritage by incorporating wool and other fibers into baskets, as well as using wet felting and needle felting techniques to create basket embellishments.
