Less is More: Discover the Power of a Limited Palette in Watercolor
Under the guidance of local watercolor artist Dale Popovich, this workshop provides students with the opportunity to learn the Zorn palette technique. Anders Zorn, the Swedish master, built a lifetime of luminous paintings on the simplest palettes. A handful of skillfully wielded colors can capture the full breadth of light, form, and atmosphere. Limiting your pigments refines your eye, strengthens your compositions, and deepens your understanding of color relationships. This two-day workshop is a study in restraint—where less becomes infinitely more.
Workshop Highlights
• Two-Day Workshop: You will complete three small studies (7″ × 11″), each focusing on the subtle interplay of color temperature and harmony.
• Workbook: Dale will provide a specially crafted PDF workbook with reference materials before the workshop. Through the paint-along method, you will observe and apply techniques in real time, anchoring the lessons firmly in practice.
• Lecture & Demonstration: A deep dive into Zorn’s masterful use of color, supported by a comprehensive workbook, color charts, and step-by-step demonstrations.
• Color Mixing Techniques: Master the essential art of mixing a full range of values and temperatures from a limited palette.
• Watercolor Demonstration: One painting will lean toward cool tones, another will balance warm and cool, and the third will emphasize warmth—all accomplished with the same three pigments.
