Upstairs Classroom

Keep your hearth clean and ash-free this winter with your own handcrafted Hearth Broom. We’ll use traditional broom corn and your choice of a broom handle, which will be provided. We’ll then decorate it with dyed basket reeds to turn it into a functional piece of Art.

This hands-on class requires some arm and hand strength and is open to ages 16 and up. There is a limit to 8 students.

Artist Bio:

Sandy VanPatten is a self-taught Broom Squire hailing from the Copper Country of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Specializing in a range of handcrafted brooms—such as crumb brushes, turkey tail & hawk tail whisk brooms, regular whisk, hearth brooms, cobweb brooms, and kitchen brooms—Sandy combines traditional craftsmanship with a deep passion for creation. Although semi-retired from her day job, Sandy remains fully committed to the art of broom making, teaching classes in Marquette, Baraga, L’anse, Porcupine Mountains, and Calumet.
