Begin your adventure into the world of drawing with charcoal as Dr. Donna walks you through a variety of tips and tricks to get you started.
Minimum student age: Open to any student who can stay focused for four hours Level: This class is open to beginners and all levels. No experience necessary. Prior drawing is welcomed. This one-room schoolhouse model mentors students at their unique levels. Minimum class size: 5; Maximum class size: 10 Supplies to bring: all materials are included. You may want to bring a snack.
Explore the basic techniques of drawing with charcoal. Students will test-drive three most common types (willow, compressed, and charcoal pencil) while experimenting with shading (narrow to broad mark-making), blending (using a paint brush, blending stump, and tissue), smudging (with fingers), reversing out highlights (using eraser pencil and kneaded eraser), adding highlights with white charcoal, and preventing smudging with fixative). Students will combine techniques in a composition of a Northwoods raccoon. Leave with a handout, your Northwoods raccoon composition, a mat to frame your work, basic supplies and confidence to continue to explore the world of drawing with charcoal.
Donna Murray-Tiedge:
Donna has loved art ever since she can remember. Art was one of her favorite subjects throughout her K-12 experience. She won a national drawing award in high school. She studied industrial design in college and after working as an “artist for industry” for twenty-five years, she returned to academia to gain teaching credentials. She has a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in art and design and a PhD in aesthetic education (teaching through the arts). She has taught at the University of Illinois, University of Wisconsin Oshkosh and Stevens Point, and online for Kent State. She continues to teach online for Boston University. She dabbles in diverse mediums, including drawing, painting, photography, and woodworking. She has been vacationing in Land O Lakes since 1969 and became a permanent resident in 2015.
