“What Makes A Great Jazz Solo?”

Join musician Ken Wiele from the comfort of your home in an evening of listening and discussing five iconic jazz solos. Ken, a retired band teacher who is passionate about jazz, will share solos via Youtube, by artists Louis Armstrong, Clifford Brown, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, John Allred. He will provide commentary on the emotional elements of each solo along with a historical background to provide some context.  This class is for all levels of interest – a musical background is not required.  Join in the discussion or just listen!

Ken Wiele

Artist bio:

Ken Wiele was Director of Bands at Indian Trail High School and Tremper High School in Kenosha Wisconsin from 2003-2018. Under Wiele’s direction, his ensembles received numerous state honors. Mr. Wiele was named “Teacher of the Year” for the Kenosha Unified School District in 2000. In 2001 Wiele received a Kohl Fellowship in recognition for his work as an innovator in the classroom. Wiele was a semi-finalist for the Grammy Educator of the Year Award. He worked as a clinician at the Birch Creek Music Center, the Wisconsin State Honors Bands, the Wisconsin State Jazz Ensembles, and the Eastman School of Music. In 2011 Wiele founded the Kenosha Jazz Allstars to provide a summer jazz experience for exemplary students. Wiele did his undergraduate work at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin where he studied with Fred Sturm. He earned his Masters degree from Carthage College. Wiele is also an avid photographer and fisherman and enjoys spending his summers in the beautiful north woods of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
