Community, Creativity, Heritage & Freedom

Join us for Northwoods Freedom Week, a community-wide celebration of America's 250th anniversary featuring live music, visual arts, local history, cultural presentations, family activities, veterans' stories, public art, and beloved Independence Day traditions.

From the Kickoff Street Dance to the Fourth of July Parade, this week showcases the creativity, heritage, and community spirit that make the Northwoods unique.

Book Launch: Today I Am An Elephant

Join local author and educator Cindy Pesek as she celebrates the release of her new children's book, Today I Am An Elephant. Families are invited to enjoy a special reading and meet the author.

About Cindy Pesek

Cindy Pesek is a Michigan-based author, storyteller, and lover of books. She has always been a voracious reader — taking out stacks of books from the local library every week — and a lifelong writer of poetry and plays.

In 2012, a house fire destroyed everything, including all of Cindy's writings. It seemed like that creative chapter was over. But inspiration has a way of finding us again.

Community Street Dance

Kick off Northwoods Freedom Week with an evening of music, food, and family fun featuring the Old Pine Road Band. Enjoy local food vendors, face painting, lawn games, community organizations, and the return of Vicki's famous hot dog sale.

About the Old Pine Road Band

Based in Northern Wisconsin, the Old Pine Road Band blends Americana, bluegrass, folk, funk, and storytelling into a distinctive "funk-grass" sound. For more than a decade, the group has entertained audiences throughout Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota, earning recognition from the Wisconsin Area Music Industry Awards and appearing at festivals across the Midwest.

Poetry Reading with Denise "Dee" Sweet

Experience an afternoon of poetry, storytelling, and reflection with one of Wisconsin's most celebrated literary voices.

About Denise "Dee" Sweet

An enrolled member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe, Denise Sweet is an acclaimed poet, educator, and former Wisconsin Poet Laureate. A professor emerita of UW–Green Bay, her work explores Indigenous identity, culture, place, and community. She has presented readings throughout North America and has received numerous awards for her contributions to literature and the arts.

Manoomin: The Story of Wild Rice

Presented by Roger LaBine

Learn about the cultural, ecological, and spiritual importance of manoomin (wild rice) to Anishinaabe communities.

About Roger LaBine

Roger LaBine is an enrolled member of the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and serves as a Water Resource Technician for the tribe's Environmental and Planning Department. A recipient of the Michigan Heritage Award and a recognized leader in wild rice preservation, LaBine has dedicated decades to protecting traditional ecological knowledge and educating the public about Anishinaabe lifeways.

Watch artist Sharon Molinaro create a live painting from start to finish while discussing her techniques, inspiration, and creative process. Visitors are encouraged to stop, ask questions, and see a work of art emerge in real time.

Outside Headwaters State Bank

Donna Lenard will create a live painting inspired by the Northern Lights. Observe how color, light, and movement combine to capture one of the Northwoods' most spectacular natural phenomena.

Stateline VFW Post

Local veterans will share stories, photographs, artifacts, and memories from their military service. This meaningful community gathering honors the experiences and sacrifices of those who served while preserving local history through personal storytelling.

U.S. Post Office

Celebrate the newest addition to Land O' Lakes' growing collection of public art with the dedication of the America 250 mural and accompanying sculpture.
