NAHM Artist Residency
This November, LOLA Arts will welcome two visiting artists or culture bearers for a weekend residency — one from Lac Vieux Desert (LVD) and one from Lac du Flambeau (LDF).
Dates
A weekend in November (weekend subject to the artist's schedule).
Description
LOLA Arts will host two visiting artists or culture bearers for a weekend. The artist will facilitate three workshops or presentations throughout their stay — one in Watersmeet, perhaps at the School District or the Boys and Girls Club; one in Lac du Flambeau, perhaps at the Historic Preservation Office in coordination with the Waaswaaganing Institute of Teaching and Learning (WIITL); and one in Land O' Lakes, at the LOLA Arts building.
Statement of Intent
The artist residency will bring programming to the Northwoods that engages with youth and/or adults in tribal (Watersmeet and Lac du Flambeau) and non-tribal (Land O' Lakes) communities. The artist's workshops will encourage both inter-generational and multi-cultural understanding of Native American cultures, which is crucial for the vitality of the area. The artist residency will elevate Indigenous culture bearers by providing an opportunity for sharing their practices and perspectives. If the artist is from outside the area, the residency brings in fresh ideas and encourages cultural exchange. If the artist is local, the residency provides an opportunity for sustaining the regional arts scene. Local artists from the LVD tribe and LDF tribe are preferred.
Honorarium
Each artist will be paid $1,500.
Lodging
The artists will have the LOLA Arts artist residency apartment at their disposal if they choose (not required). They will also have access to the art supplies and materials available at the LOLA building.
Materials
The artist will work with LOLA Arts staff to ensure that all materials needed for the workshops are secured.
Theme
The topic of the presentation or workshop will encourage understanding and preservation of Native American culture. The artist should use their discretion regarding the content of the Land O' Lakes workshop. Because Land O' Lakes is not a tribal community, sacred or restricted traditional knowledge would not fit well in that context.
