LOLA’s Zombie Crawl Recognized as a 2019 Top Rural Development Initiative by Wisconsin Rural Partners

Wisconsin Rural Partners is an organization who’s educational mission is dedicated to building collaborative partnerships across the public and private sectors to benefit rural Wisconsin.  Each year they can only recognize a fraction of the wonderful rural initiatives as Top Rural Development Initiative winners. However, many other applicants had stories they thought should be shared. The WI Rural Partners highlighted two top rural success stories from the past year, and one was LOLA’s annual Zombie Crawl! LOLA’s (Land O’ Lakes Area Artisans) Annual Zombie Crawl will enter its 4th year in 2019. The event began as a fun Halloween-themed pub crawl, and has evolved into an annual weekend-long event in 2018 offering themed art classes and events. LOLA collaborated with community partners Land O’ Lakes Historical Society & Northern Waters Museum where a story telling session focused on local legends was held, and The Gateway Lodge, which offered ghost tours of the historic hotel and hosted LOLA’s special guests, The Fox Valley Ghost Hunters.

Many area taverns, restaurants, and hotels received increased business over the Zombie Crawl weekend. Participating establishments are also part of a spooky scavenger hunt in which crawl participants collect candy “body parts” along the way. The main attraction of the Zombie Crawl is the most artistic aspect of the event: the costumes and makeup. Participants who purchase “Zombification Upgrade” are able to have their zombie makeup applied by LOLA artists using professional grade makeup and techniques. After makeup, participants also receive the option of zombie costume extras like fake blood, ashes, dirt, and other gruesome accessories.
