Loon Drawing on Toned Paper
Tuesday, August 7
Join Dr. Donna Murray-Tiedge on a technical and creative journey of learning how to draw with confidence and precision in realistic representation by using the grid method (a time-tested technique utilized by master artists, including Leonardo da Vinci and Vincent van Gogh) on toned paper featuring an iconic Northwoods subject. Drawing on toned paper simplifies the mechanics of drawing realistically because the paper color provides the mid-tones of the value scale (from the darkest blacks to the lightest whites, with varying shades of gray in between). Working from the middle of the value scale and gradually building light and dark tones encourages subtle transitions in a full range of value, which is essential for any level of realism.

Less is More: Discover the Power of a Limited Palette in Watercolor
2-Day Workshop:
August 19 & 20, 2025
Under the guidance of local watercolor artist Dale Popovich, this workshop provides students with the opportunity to learn the Zorn palette technique. Anders Zorn, the Swedish master, built a lifetime of luminous paintings on the simplest palettes. A handful of skillfully wielded colors can capture the full breadth of light, form, and atmosphere. Limiting your pigments refines your eye, strengthens your compositions, and deepens your understanding of color relationships. This two-day workshop is a study in restraint—where less becomes infinitely more.
